POSTOPERATIVE NASAL PACKING IN COSMETIC NOSE SURGERY

In a study conducted among Aesthetic and Plastic surgeons working in the United States in 2010, post-operative care trends for aesthetic nose surgery were examined, and the use of tampons and splints (casts) was questioned. In particular, whether or not to use tampons is a debated issue.

Results: After aesthetic nose surgery, a significant number of aesthetic surgeons stated that they regularly apply ice post-operatively and sometimes resort to a second treatment (e.g., steroids, arnica) to prevent bruising. A smaller number of surgeons performing rhinoplasty reported encountering more problems, especially related to the nasal tip, after surgery. Post-operative care following aesthetic nose surgery varies significantly among aesthetic surgeons. According to the reported data, the majority of surgeons working privately and performing aesthetic nose surgery in the United States continue to use tampons after surgery.

If I decide to use tampons after surgery, I always use silicone nasal tampons with holes in the middle that allow breathing through both nostrils. Depending on the procedure I perform inside the patient's nose, I remove the nasal tampons within 2-5 days. Silicone tampons do not adhere to the nasal mucosa and wounds, so they can be easily and painlessly removed.
