We can answer this question both yes and no. From the patient's perspective, the patient does not suffer much during the surgery and in the postoperative period. Generally, the surgery takes 1-2 hours and is not very long. It is not considered a surgery that is highly risky from a vital perspective compared to other surgeries. From the perspective of an aesthetic surgeon, aesthetic rhinoplasty is one of the difficult surgeries that require a high degree of attention, experience, and skill. Every aesthetic surgeon can perform rhinoplasty, but the results do not always turn out as desired. Patient-specific factors also come into play here. Every nose is different from person to person. Especially noses with fleshy tips make surgery more challenging. Revision rhinoplasties (secondary rhinoplasty) are particularly difficult surgeries because all anatomical structures are disrupted, and extensive scar tissue forms inside the nose. Important note: Most aesthetic surgeons generally do not want to perform revision surgery on aesthetic nose surgeries performed by others. The difficulty of the surgery and the possibility of attributing all responsibility to the surgeon performing the secondary surgery in case of an adverse outcome play a significant role here.
There is no upper age limit for this surgery (as long as there is no general health problem preventing the patient from receiving general anesthesia). A potential patient should also be physically and psychologically healthy, aware of complications, and have realistic goals and expectations. In recent years, with the lowering of the age of nose development, aesthetic rhinoplasty can be performed from the age of 15-16, but it is more appropriate to perform aesthetic rhinoplasty from the age of 17-18, taking into account the psychological development of the individual.
Usually, it is expected that the menstrual period has ended, but there is no problem for women to have this surgery while menstruating.
Smoking negatively affects wound healing. It has adverse effects not only in aesthetic rhinoplasty but also in any surgical intervention. If the patient is also receiving general anesthesia, postoperative comfort (coughing, throat irritation) is affected more negatively in smokers. Therefore, it is recommended not to smoke at least during the last week before the surgery. It is also advisable not to use it after surgery for a certain period.
First, consult your doctor. However, generally, even simple upper respiratory tract diseases such as colds and flu can be an obstacle to surgery. It is advisable to have the surgery after recovery.
You should not eat or drink anything after midnight on the day you will have surgery. You should come to the surgery on an empty stomach, as if you were fasting. If you are going to have surgery in the afternoon or evening, a 6-hour fasting period is sufficient.
Dr. Gürcan Aslan performs aesthetic rhinoplasty under general anesthesia. Theoretically, these surgeries can be performed under local anesthesia, but general anesthesia is preferred for both patient and surgeon comfort as long as the patient's health permits. General anesthesia is very safe nowadays. The patient is first taken to the operating room and examined by the anesthesiologist. The patient is laid in a comfortable position on the operating table. Operating rooms are places where a certain temperature is maintained throughout the year. ⦁ A serum is attached to your left arm by the anesthesia doctor. ⦁ Electrodes are attached to your body to measure heartbeats healthily. ⦁ A blood pressure cuff is placed on your arm. ⦁ All your functions are monitored by advanced monitors controlled by the anesthesia doctor. ⦁ The needles to make you sleep are performed through a vein route attached to your arm. Thus, you do not feel an additional needle pain since the vein route has already been attached. ⦁ After the patient falls asleep, anesthesia gases and oxygen are administered to the patient through a tube to be placed through a mask first and then into the trachea.
You will need assistance at least on the day of your surgery to apply ice properly.
After rhinoplasty, I usually keep my patients in the hospital because they receive general anesthesia. If the patient has surgery in the morning, they can easily leave in the late afternoon and spend the night in their own home environment. This depends on the patient's preference.
